Some were downright academically poor whereas others made consistently poor grades because they were simply not serious with their academics; they seemed a hopeless bunch. A couple of years down the line, I am more than impressed by what they have made of their lives. I look at their lives now but see no correlation between what they once were and what they are now. As a matter of fact, it will seem as though such individuals have always been smart, intelligent, serious-minded and purpose driven.             When the names of some of the world`s great achievers are mentioned, many assume these persons were actually geniuses from childhood. ...

In the scheme of things, the employer expects a certain level of productivity from the employee. In some quarters, there are performance indicators and quotas. The more productive an employee, the better for the organization he or she works for. The sad reality, however, is that, for one reason or the other, some employees who definitely are skilled, competent and well qualified for the job over time develop some sort of a lackadaisical attitude towards work and only put up their best when they are under the watchful eyes of supervisors. That unemployment is one of the major challenges that has bedeviled this country for decades is not in doubt. The increasing numbers of unemployed graduates is a very troubling reality. Governments over the years have done their bit to help create more job opportunities for unemployed graduates. Truth be told, relatively little success has been chalked in this exercise. The stark reality is that, the nation`s tertiary institutions are continually churning out significant numbers of graduates whereas the job market is not expanding that fast. In other words, there are more graduates than there are jobs. Intense competition and the ‘whom you know’ or better still ‘who knows you’ syndrome holds sway.             Another critical factor is that, many graduates simply do not know where or how to find these relatively few job opportunities.
