Easter Celebrations in Ghana: An Overview

Image
Easter is closely associated with Easter eggs and Easter bunnies in some cultures, especially in the West. Mention Easter in Ghana and some think of the ‘paragliding festival.’ This subject will be discussed in the latter part of this write-up. One may ask, what then is Easter? Basically, Easter is a Christian festival held annually by most Christians across the globe to commemorate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the Church`s calendar, Easter is preceded by “Lent” (40 days fasting period - an imitation of Jesus` 40 days fast) and “Palm Sunday” (commemoration of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem). Admittedly, the word "Easter" does not appear in the Bible and no early church celebrations of Christ's resurrection are mentioned in Scripture. However, this does not by any means negate its celebration. Easter, like Christmas, is a tradition that developed later in church history (prior to the 3 rd century) .   However, unlike ...

The Making Of A Good Writer: My Story

Image
Photo: Daniel Dela Dunoo I am obviously not in the league of towering literary figures such as William Shakespeare , Stephen King ,  J. K. Rowling ,  John Grisham , and  Jane Austen among others; I am neither a Chinua Achebe nor an Ama Ata Aidoo . The Peggy Oppongs , the  Lawrence Darmanis , and the  Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies are way ahead of me. However, I have a story to tell; a story about humble beginnings and a rewarding journey. Peradventure, some reader may find some encouragement to persist in the pursuit of a career path that may seem far-fetched. My story I did not major in courses such as Communications, Literature, English, Publishing, and Journalism among others. My majors at the University and at the Polytechnic a couple of years back did not point to a writing career; admittedly I started doing some bits and pieces of writing in my early teens (and continued all through school – both academic writing and doing some personal writing...

Indispensable Life Lessons From The Animal Kingdom: The Case of Female Worker Ants

Image
The notion that humans can learn a thing or two from the animal kingdom may seem far-fetched to some. For others, however, this notion is right on point. I am glad to be numbered among the latter. In this blog post, I will share with you three essential life lessons I have learned from the work ethic of female worker ants. Let`s get right into the discussion, commencing with some background information about ants generally and eventually zeroing in on female worker ants. Ants – A brief background Ants live in well-structured communities typically referred to as colonies and comprise somewhere around 11, 000 species. Ant colonies are varied in size; some may number in the millions while some may comprise only a couple of members. Members of an ant colony usually fall into categories (castes), each with a different role. There are three main castes, namely queens, males and female worker ants. The queens are responsible for mating to produce fertilized eggs which hatch to...

Five Keys To Actualize Your Dreams This Year

Image
“ If you can dream it, you can do it. ” - Walt Disney The first month of 2018 will in the next couple of hours give way to February. Sadly, however, rather than look at the approaching month with optimism, some persons have consigned themselves to fate. Why so? I have discovered that the more one`s hopes and expectations are dashed (and essentially never seeing the light of day) and the longer it takes, it has a way of crippling that individual`s sense of passion, drive, creativity, and optimism. As a matter of fact, some persons simply throw their hands in despair, with the refrain, ‘whatever will be, will be’. Such a depressing state is usually born out of the fact that in spite of investing so much time, effort and sometimes money in the pursuit of one dream or the other, there is virtually nothing of substance to show for all the work; they never seem to realize their dreams. It is as though chasing the wind – being on a wild goose chase, as it were. The first week of 2018 w...
